About

Our Story

Free Media Goo was created a LONG time ago.  How long ago? Check out this archive from 2001 – our very first design. Yikes!

Back then, there weren’t many sources for free images.  This sucked if you were a student or a new graduate, and didn’t have a very big budget for stock photos.  We tried to bridge that gap by providing free artwork for all to use.  I can say, we succeeded.

Over the past few years, this website faced neglect.  First, each page was hard-coded.  That’s right, we had to go in by hand to add a new photo.  Not only that, but there was no automatic resizing of pictures.  So each thumbnail, medium and high res photo had to be done individually.

Since this is a hobby site, that took away a lot of incentive to add new content.

But Now We Are BACK!

Over the past few months, we decided to move all our images over to a real CMS.  That wasn’t easy (it was quite a PITA), but we are 95% through.  This will allow us to add images much more quickly and efficiently.  We have a TON in backlog from all the years of traveling and such when it took so long to post, so except new content weekly.

We still might make some changes.  For example, right now you can only get to the pictures by going through the category pages.  This is soon going to be unmanageable. Our hope is to allow for you to search on the site for each individual medium-res photo, and then click through to the high-res version.

If you’d like to join our band of contributors, please get in touch.  Free media is just as important today as it was in 2001 – and you can help our your sisters and brothers around the world.

Why Completely Free Images?

Am I crazy? No, I just like making quality royalty free content available for you. FreeMediaGoo.com was created for creative developers by a semi-creative developer. The mission of the site is to create a means for anyone to gather library of stock images that can be used for free in print, film, TV, Internet – heck, project it onto the moon with a laser for all we care! (That would be cool – if you do the moon thing, please let us know.) You are free to use these images for both commercial and personal use. The content we provide is royalty free. No need to mention us – but if the spirit moves you and you want to tell others about our site, feel free to give us a link somewhere. If not, no biggy.

If you want to sign up for our email list, we’ll send out a notification when we post a new royalty free image to the site. Since this is a hobby of mine I’d be really surprised/pleased if I sent out an email more than 1x a month, but maybe I’ll get laid off and have more time. I must admit, I’m not hoping for it.

Have fun using the images! Make great things.
